Sale of Bell Bay Power Station

Power plant for sale - whole or part of plant

Hydro Tasmania is pleased to offer a fabulous opportunity to purchase a low mileage, well-constructed power station at a fraction of the cost of a new plant.

Bell Bay Power Station (BBPS) is located on a 25-hectare site, 50 kilometres north of Launceston on the banks of the Tamar River. It was originally established in the early 1970s to provide thermal generation back up for Hydro Tasmania’s hydropower system.

BBPS comprises two generating units. They were commissioned in 1971 and 1974 respectively and fired by heavy fuel oil with the steam produced feeding a 120 MW steam turbine. The units were converted to gas in March 2003 and unit 2 in late 2003.

For many years the units were run only at times of very low water storage levels in the hydropower system.

The plant was run for less than 10% of the time over the 30-year period from commissioning with a total running time of approximately 45,000 hours.

The plant has been and continues to be well maintained.

Hydro Tasmania has more detailed information available at request, including O&M manuals and condition assessments from the recent gas conversion.
